3 Day Assault BVS and Komodo Dragon: packs that fit your kit
The 3 Day Assault BVS and the Komodo Dragon are built for military load carriage. BVS stands for Bolstered Ventilation and Stability.
Pads on the back panel give the pack something stable to sit on when you wear it over a plate carrier, so it doesn't slide around when you move. The gaps between them let air through. Not wearing armour? Take the pads out.
Both packs use the adjustable Futura Yoke, so you set the harness to your torso length instead of living with whatever fit came out of the box. That matters more once there's a plate carrier between your shoulders and your hips.
Both also take up to three hydration bladders and have coated zip ports on top for antennas, cables and drinking tubes. The side pockets fit a bottle, a tripod or a rifle butt.
The Komodo Dragon is the bigger of the two, at about 40 litres against 33. It also has an internal MOLLE panel for mounting a radio.
For bigger multi-day loads, the Blackjack line steps up to the Blackjack LT 35, the Blackjack 50 and the Blackjack 100. The 50 and 100 run on carbon-fibre frames, and the 50 is based on packs developed for USSOCOM. All three arrive in Q1 2027.
US or INTL version?
Some Mystery Ranch military packs come in two versions. The US models are made in the United States. The INTL models are made in Vietnam and cost noticeably less.
The design and features are very close. Colour options can differ.
The price gap is big enough to notice. Right now the 3 Day Assault BVS (US) starts at 759,90€, and the INTL version is 419,90€. The Komodo Dragon (US) is 799,90€, and the INTL is 449,90€. The US versions are in stock now. The INTL versions arrive in Q1 2027.
Getting the size right
Mystery Ranch sizes its adjustable packs by torso length, not by how tall you are.
Have someone run a tape measure down your spine from the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of your neck) to the top of your hip bones, roughly level with your navel.
For packs sized S/M and L/XL:
- S/M: about 38-51 cm torso
- L/XL: about 43-61 cm torso
If you land in the overlap, think about where the waist belt will sit. The whole point is to move the load off your shoulders and onto your hips. A perfectly fitted harness with the belt in the wrong place defeats the purpose.
Travel and office
The Mission Rover 45 is a travel bag that carries as a backpack, a shoulder bag or a suitcase. Despite the name, it holds 42 litres. It opens flat like normal luggage and has a separate bottom compartment for shoes or dirty laundry. Add the Mission Packing Cube Set if you like knowing where your socks are.
The 3 Way 18 works as a briefcase, a shoulder bag or a backpack. It expands by about five litres when the day adds a jacket, groceries or whatever else wasn't in the plan.
FAQ
Blitz 30 or 2 Day Assault?
Capacity is almost the same, 29 litres against 27. The difference is how you get into them.
Pick the 2 Day Assault if you want the classic 3-ZIP and lots of small internal pockets for admin, cables and documents.
Pick the Blitz 30 if you carry bulkier stuff. The horseshoe zip opens the whole main compartment, the big side pockets have drain holes, and there are loop panels inside for adding pouches.
Both have a 15-inch laptop sleeve and a removable waist belt.
Will a Mystery Ranch pack fit over a plate carrier?
The BVS models are designed for it. That means the 3 Day Assault BVS, the Komodo Dragon and the Blackjack 100 (Arriving early 2027).
Everyday packs like the Blitz and the 2 Day Assault still go over a chest rig or carrier. They just don't have the removable bolsters that keep a BVS pack steady on armour.
